APPT draws big poker stars

PokerStars announced this week there is already a line-up of 20 top poker champions eager to hit the felt for Season 2 of the APPT in Macau.

The latest addition to the list of players planning to be there when the cards hit the felt Sept. 1 is Johnny Chan. The 10-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner has more than $6.7 million in tournament earnings to his name and plans to add to that in Macau.

"It's great for Poker in Asia that there's a major tournament like this here in Macau," said Chan. "It's attracting all top players in the sport, and letting the world know that there is real poker here, and real poker players here, and that anybody can win millions of dollars."

Chan won't be the only Main Event champion at the event either. Joe Hachem, the 2005 WSOP champions, is planning to play as well as Scotty Nguyen.

Some of the other notables joining them will be Bertrand Grospellier, Lee Nelson, Isabelle Mercier, Van Nguyen, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Mike McDonald, Mel Judah, Daniel Schrieber, Harry Demetriou, Anthony Reviera and Isaac Galazan.

The winners from the 2007 APPT season will also return to the tour in Macau to try for a second win. Dinh Le, from Vietnam, is the returning Macau main event champion. Eric Assadourian, from Australia, also returns as the Macau High Roller Event champion from 2007.

The APPT Seoul champion, Ziv Bachar, and the 2007 APPT Sydney champion, Grant Levy will both be in town to play as well.

"We are excited to have so many of the world's top players coming to the Grand Waldo Casino in Macau this year," said Jeffrey Haas, President of the PokerStars APPT.

"It's a testament to the success of Season 1 that champions such as Chan, Joe Hachem, Scotty Nguyen, Men 'The Master' Nguyen and Barry Greenstein are eager to compete on the felt during our second season."

Haas said the APPT is privileged to continue leading the growth of poker and poker culture in Asia. They're expecting local and regional player participation to at least double in this year's events.

"The PokerStars.net APPT is taking poker to a new level in Asia Pacific, and when this Macau tournament is broadcast on TV around the world we expect this growth to continue," Haas said.

The PokerStars APPT Season 2 stop in Macau will include the $25,000 HKD main event running Sept. 1-6. The high roller event with a $150,000 HKD buy-in will also return, playing Sept. 7-9.

Both events have a guaranteed $10 million HKD prize pool and will be televised. PokerStars is expecting more than 500 players for the main event, so it is likely to set a new record for player numbers and prize pool for poker tournaments in Asia.
