According to a recent poll on the Duplicate Poker site, a total of 29% of 1,106 poker player named Montgomery a 2-1 favorite over the rest of the final nine. This is all despite the fact that Montgomery has six million chips less than Phillips and four million less than Ivan Demidov.
The high expectations for Montgomery are perhaps warranted, considering he has a WPT final table on his resume, which is more than can be said for the rest of the final nine. Montgomery made the absolutely stacked final table of the 2008 WPT LAPC, which included players like Phil Ivey, Nam Le and Phil Hellmuth.
In fact, aside from David "Chino" Rheem, Montgomery probably has the most experience playing tournament poker of any of the November Nine. It's also important to note that Montgomery has twice the chips Rheem does, which could be a major factor.
The Duplicate Poker poll also revealed the widespread belief among poker players that skill has everything to do with poker success. Close to 90% of those polled said skill has a greater impact than luck in the course of a poker tournament.
Duplicate Poker is of course one of the only sites that completely eliminates the luck of the draw by having players dealt the same cards on two different tables and seeing who plays the hands better. It's an experimental approach that is starting to catch on with players.
Best of all, because luck is completely removed from the game, it is entirely legal in the U.S.
